NON-SURGICAL PROCEDURES
Dr. Chen’s practice provides a variety of surgical and non-surgical services for your periodontal care. In every situation, we are as conservative as possible in our treatment recommendations. We limit surgeries to the areas that is absolutely necessary.
At the early stages of periodontal disease, non-surgical periodontal therapy is the best approach. Even in severe cases, we perform non-surgical procedures first so that we can improve the overall tissue quality prior to surgery and limit the areas requiring surgery.
Scaling and Root Planing
The initial stage of treatment for your gum disease is usually a thorough cleaning that may include scaling (deep cleaning) to remove plaque and tartar deposits beneath the gum line. Then the roots of the tooth are planed to smooth the root surface, allowing the gum tissue to heal and reattach to the tooth.
Locally delivered antibiotics and Chemicals
Antibiotics or irrigation with anti-microbial (chemical agents or mouth rinses) may be used to control the bacteria that release toxins causing tissue destructions. In some cases, Dr. Chen may also place antibiotic directly into the periodontal pockets after scaling and planning to control infection and to encourage increased healing.
Bite Adjustment
A bite is considered to be healthy when all or most of the teeth are present and not destroyed by normal daily usage.
It is destructive when teeth show wear, looseness or when TMJ (jaw joint) damage is seen. Bite therapy helps to restore a bite, allowing it to function without damage and destruction. The therapy may include:
- Bite splint therapy using a custom made plastic bite guard to keep the teeth out of destructive forces.
- Braces, to reposition mal-aligned or drifted teeth.
- Replacement of old, worn out or damaged fillings
- Reconstruction of badly worn and damaged teeth
